Mosaic Supplies

When creating mosaic art, there are particular supplies that you will need. These supplies all depend on the type of mosaic tile that you are using for the art; that is if it is a glass, stone or ceramic mosaic tile.

There are mosaic starter kits available for those who need them. These kits usually have all the things that are needed for mosaic art, like tile grout, cutting tools and glue. The cutting tools usually include a glass cutter or a tile nipper. Mosaic glass cutter is an important tool that is required when working with glass mobile tiles. This cutter allows the artist to make a clean and precise cut on the tile. With proper care and maintenance, the wheel-shaped blades of the glass cutter can stay sharp and effective for thousands of hours of use. Of course, replacement blades are available, if needed.

The mosaic tile nipper was actually made for ceramic materials, which is why they cut tile, china and dinnerware efficiently. However, when cutting dinnerware, don't get frustrated if the nipper doesn't always cut, as some dinnerware was designed in such a way. While using the mosaic tile nipper, safety glasses with side shields are a necessity. However, do not use these nippers to cut glass, as they will only crush and splinter the glass mosaic tiles.

Most of the mosaic artists prefer to use Welbond for bonding purposes. This is because there is no close second to this glue when it comes to bonding tiles. It bonds to hundreds of materials, is water resistant and can be easily cleaned with soap and water. However, don't use this glue in pools or fountains, as it is water based.

Another important mosaic supply is the mosaic tile grout, which is usually found pre-mixed with sand. Sand is used as it provides the strength when the gaps between tiles are 1/8" or greater. The mosaic tile mesh is 38.5 inches wide and is sold by the foot in a continuous piece. This mesh is made from woven fiberglass. Other mosaic supplies that are needed are tweezers and mounting grids. The specific supplies you need actually depend upon the function of the type of mosaic tile that you use and on how you plan to install it.
