Safe Use Of Your Ladder

There is a right way and a wrong way to use an a-frame ladder. Ladders allow a person to climb up to high locations which could be potentially dangerous - like when in the extension ladder position. Although ladders in general are designed for safety, there are some basic ladder safety tips to keep in mind to help keep you safe.

Step placement is one element of safe ladder use. Ladders all have certain steps that are dangerous to step on. You should never step on the top step of a step ladder. Also, it is important not to stand on the top four rungs of a straight ladder.

Ladder placement is another element of safety. Be sure the ladder is not too close or too far away from it's support. Being too close could cause the ladder to fall over backwards. If the ladder is too close, the feet could slip out from underneath it. Also, if the ladder is placed on ground that is too soft, it could sink in and slip out from under you. A great tip in this case is to place a board underneath the feat to prevent sinking.

People who spend a lot of time on ladders tend to become too comfortable working on them. Do not let yourself get to this point. Always keep one hand on the ladder and do not carry tools up with you. Tools can be hauled up on a rope later. Also, never overreach an object. This could tip the ladder. Another thing people do when they are too comfortable climbing ladders is to face away while climbing. Facing away from a ladder can cause improper balance. Ladder balance is the key to safety. Always face the ladder.

Ladders are designed as safely as can possibly be. However, ladders can dangerous if you don't follow these common sense tips.
