California is one of the most prolific wine producing regions in the world. While relatively new to the wine arena compared to European countries like France and Italy, California is definitely a wine producing spot that can hold its own. This West Coast state offers wines in many varieties, from reds to blushes to whiteswith each type having its own unique style and taste. The renowned white wines of California are especially delightful.
There are many different types of white wines that are bottled in California. Typically, all white wines should be served at a chilled temperature, and they are usually lighter and crisper in taste than red wines. The grapes used to make white wines are usually a lighter color than those used to make red wines, but this is not always the case. Red wines are colored by the maceration of the dark skins of the grapes along with the juice. Darker colored grapes that are used to make white wines can color the wine (even if just the juice of the grape is used), and therefore cause a type of wine known as blush or ros'.
Some of the most well known varieties of the renowned white wines of California are the same that are produced in other parts of the world. Chardonnay, Chablis, white pinot, Gew'rztraminer, Riesling, Muscadet, Pinot Grigio and Pinot Blanc are all varieties of white wine that are distilled in California. Depending on the grapes used and the winery that produces the white wines, these varieties can either be exceptional or on the other end, barely passable.
Choosing between the renowned white wines of California will depend on what you plan to serve the wine with. Lighter wines, such as Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay, will work well with almost any type of entree; some examples are seafood, pasta and fowl. Other white wines, such as the Riesling, can be served with such courses as desserts. When choosing a white wine, it is often a good idea to consult your local wine shop or even websites about wine in order to find the correct wine to serve with your meal or dessert.
California is home to many different types of wine, both red and white, but many feel that their white wines are truly magnificent. If you pay attention to wine reviews, and go to wine tastings (often local wine stores have these), and you'll be sure to find a white wine that you'll enjoy. |
