Safe Internet Shopping

Shopping on the internet is becoming more and more popular and widespread. From online auction sites to online supermarkets who will deliver your weekly groceries, internet shopping is a rapidly expanding market. It can be easy, time saving and relatively hassle free-but, as with anything else it pays to do some research before handing over your cash and your details. There are a number of things that you should make yourself aware of before taking the decision to shop online.

You surf the net until you find the site from which you wish to buy-before committing yourself to anything make a note of the company's contact details. Don't just rely on email communication which can prove unreliable. Sometimes there are hidden costs that you need to be aware of-is the price inclusive of sales tax and what might be the costs of delivering the goods. You need to find out this information before you commit to buy, otherwise you may find yourself spending more than you bargained for.

Normally when you buy goods online you will be asked to pay with a credit or debit card. Try to ensure that the web page where you enter your personal details is a secure one. Websites usually display a padlock or some other kind of security symbol to allay the fears of potential buyers. Most of these websites will inform you that you are entering a secure page and will also inform you when you leave it. If you don't get these messages then be careful, not every site on the internet is safe to buy from. You should always print out a copy of the order for your goods and any corresponding email that is sent as a verification of your order.

There have been occasions when people have bought something over the internet and the site was not as secure as they thought. This means that the wrong people can access your card and bank details-people have been robbed of a lot of money this way. It is not true to say that all internet shopping has this risk-the major supermarkets for example are generally pretty careful with their customer's details; after all they want you to come back and shop week after week. Nevertheless it is common sense to check your bank statements carefully when ever you have made a purchase over the internet. Recently there has been a spate of attempted email scams-these emails tell you that something is wrong with your account and they need your personal details and pin number. Never, ever disclose your pin number to anyone, no matter who they claim to be-and especially do not give out your pin over the internet; if a site asks for that information then don't buy from them. Be especially careful when buying from internet auction sites. Do your homework and don't buy from a seller who does not have a credible reputation or who is not willing to answer your questions with regard to their product. If you follow these few rules when purchasing goods and services over the internet then you should generally be safe.
